The history of the Illinois Democratic Peoples Union began shortly after a merger between the Communist Party and Democratic Peoples Union. This came as a result of waxing membership in the DPU and waning commitment on the part of the Communist leadership. Before the merger, the Communist Party had three members in Illinois, who then joined the DPU. The new DPU members set about building the party state organization and running in the state's senate and gubernatorial races. Eventually the party became the strongest in the state and brief electoral success came with a DPU governor being elected for one term.
